The Supermarine Spitfire is a British single-seat fighter aircraft that was used by the Royal Air Force and other Allied countries before, during, and after World War II.
Many variants of the Spitfire were built, using several wing configurations, and it was produced in greater numbers than any other British aircraft.

It was Robert McLean, head of Vickers Aviation, who preferred the name Spitfire because it was a name he used for his daughter Annie, describing her as 'a little spitfire'.
The name was confirmed by the Air Ministry in 1936, much to Mitchell's irritation. 'He wanted the term Shrew to be adopted,' Beaver said.
