David Shepherd remembers well the first time he past over the Forth Bridge in the cab of a locomotive. The sheer elegance and intricacy of the steelwork. This bridge is surely a monument to the great building of the late Victorian era.
The bridge took 5000 men seven years to build and cost 3 million pounds. It is one and a half miles long and is made up of one hundred and forty five acres of steel, that is painted every for years by twenty men using seventeen tons of paint.
The train crossing the bridge in this painting is an LNER A2 Pacific in all its steam majesty.
