The donkey or ass is a domesticated member of the horse family, Equidae.
The wild ancestor of the donkey is the African wild ass, E. africanus. The donkey has been used as a working animal for at least 5000 years.
A donkey will show their teeth for a number of reasons:
If they are angry, the ears will go flat back and they will lunge at you with teeth bared.
If they think you have something to feed them, they will be more timid in their approach and appear to nibble at you.
